Dangerous Waste Disposal at Barrington

Click Here to read the recent developments on this story.

From a message sent by Simon Crosby to cam.misc:

CamAir '95 was formed recently to oppose the granting of licenses to
the Barrington Cement Works to burn hazardous waste in its cement
plant. The fallout area from The Barrington Cement Works extends
right over Cambridge city and surrounding villages.

The Problem
------------

The Barrington Cement Works has been burning hazardous waste
(industrial toxic waste, solvents, etc) for 18 months on a trial basis
and has now applied for permanent licenses from HMIP which will enable
it to continue operation on a permanent basis. Conveniently the
government has labeled the waste as "fuel" for industrial use and has
allowed trial burning on an experimental basis. It is vital that the
firm is not allowed to continue with this practice.

Alarmingly the firm has applied for permits which would allow it to
increase the proportion of heavy metals in the waste burned, although
this will not increase the energy output from the waste. The obvious
conclusion is that they find it more lucrative to burn wastes which
are more toxic and which industry finds it more costly and difficult
to dispose of.

The chief objection to the process involved is that it causes
widespread dispersion of the toxic components of the "fuel", including
heavy metals and dioxins. Dioxins are linked to cancer of various
forms and there is no known safe exposure level. Dioxins are formed
in the flue gases after combustion, and are spread widely over the
fallout area.

The burning of industrial solvents undermines the economic viability
of the recycling industry which can recycle much of the waste.

PUBLIC MEETING Mon 6 Feb
-------------------------

CamAir '95 will be holding a public meeting on Monday 6th February at
the Long Road Sixth Form College, at 8pm, which will be addressed by an
academic from Liverpool University who is an expert in the effects of
toxic waste pollution on humans, a campaigner opposed to the licencing
of toxic wastes as fuel, a representative of HMIP, and a
representative from the Barrington Cement Works. The meeting will be
chaired by Chris Bradford, chairman of the Cambridge County Council.

LOBBY YOUR MP
-------------

Please try to attend the meeting. Also lobby your MP. Tell your MP
that you oppose the granting of licenses to Barrington Cement Works to
burn hazardous waste. Also tell your MP you oppose the government's
labelling of industrial waste as fuel. If you live in Cambridge city,
your MP is Anne Campbell, who will be holding an online surgery
tonight between 5 and 7 p.m. Send her email at
Anne.Campbell.MP@solo.pipex.com
