[index] Health visitors' & school nurses' funding slashed - (27/5/97)

Cambridge and Huntingdon Health Authority are going to cut £320,000 from their health visiting and school nursing budget in order to redirect the money to 'higher priority areas'. Up to 14 jobs will be lost.
The 'Cambridge Evening News' of Saturday 17th May reported health workers saying that early hearing loss and growth disorders such as Turner's syndrome would go undetected. The paper quoted CHHA finance chairman, Steve Clark as saying 'The reality is that we have limited money and we have to make tough choices. This means having to forego useful services in order to pay for more benificial services like intensive care, emergencies and cancer care.'

A cross party delegation of MPs and county councillors has met the new minister for local government Hilary Armstrong with a bid to get Cambridgeshire a fairer deal from the Area Cost Adjustment Scheme.

The Emmaus community in Landbeach which gives shelter and employment to homeless people is working to raise £750,000 to double its accomodation facilities.

The first proper brewery to operate in Cambridge for 25 years, the City of Cambridge Brewery launched its debut product 'Hobsons Choice' at the Cambridge Beer Festival last week.


[index] Cycle paths wanted - (27/5/97)

County and Ely district councillor Donald Adey believes the city, district and county councils should join forces to build more cycle routes in the area. A proposed cycling route between Witchford and Ely which was supported by Cllr Adey is now being built.

Prince Charles has agreed to be patron of the Ely stained glass museum for five years and has backed an appeal for £480,000 for the museum to relocate to the South Triforium of the cathedral.


[index] Ely railway bridge closed to traffic - (27/5/97)

Station Road in Ely will be closed for a further two weeks after the railway bridge over it was damaged when it was hit by a vehicle on Monday 19th May.
The Ely bridge is hit in collisions by more vehicles than any other bridge in Britain except one.


[index] Roman road clean-up - (17/5/97)

Thanks to a government scheme whereby land-fill waste site operators can claim back 90 per cent of contributions they make to certain environmental projects East Waste is donating £400,000 to local schemes including a revamp of the Mere Way Wildlife Corridor. This scheme involves conservation and publicity work on the stretch of the Mere Way Roman road between King's Hedges and Landbeach.

[index] £11m horse doping clinic opened in Fordham - (17/5/97)

An £11m centre for tackling doping in animal racing has been opened by senior steward of the jockey club, Sir Thomas Pilkington. The 35 acre site facilities replace smaller premises in Snailwell Road. Samples will be analysed from camels, greyhounds and pigeons as well as from horses.

[index] 5,000 elderly to be left with no chiropody care - (17/5/97)

On July 1st £140,000 will be cut from chiropody services leaving 5,000 elderly people without NHS chiropody care. Other patients will continue to receive care based on assessment of their need.

[index] New appointment to help East Cambs small businesses - (17/5/97)

The appointment of Ray Harding as new economic and development manager for East Cambridgeshire District Council has been welcomed by the Ely Chamber of Trade.
In last Friday's 'Cambridge Evening News', he is quoted as saying 'Two of my early priorities are to develop strategies for each of our three town centres and to put together a package of support for our village shops.
'The key to success in the economic and community development fields is to work in partnership with business, voluntary groups and the local community.'


[index] East Cambs supports James Paice - (2/5/97)

In yesterday's general election support for the Conservatives was proved to have disintegrated around the country. Not so in East Cambridgeshire where James Paice kept his seat with a clear majority. The results for the constituency are as follows:-

J. Paice		Conservative		24,397 		42.9%
R. Collinson		Labour			15,048		26.5%
S. Brinton		Liberal Democrat	14,246		25.1%
S. Howlett		Referendum		2,838		5%
K. Lam			Independent		167		0.3%
P. While		Natural Law		111		0.2%

Around the country 631 results out of 659 have come in so far. The Conservatives hold 160 seats, have gained no seats, have lost 175 seats and are expected to end up with 166 seats. Labour hold 417 seats, have gained 145 seats, have lost no seats and are expected to end up with 419 seats. The Liberal Democrats hold 43 seats, have gained 28 seats, have lost two seats and are expected to end up with 45 seats.
