Part C5 - LANDSCAPE AND LAND-USE HISTORY

C5.1 The Sedge Fen & St. Edmund's Fen
     C5.2 Adventurers' Fen
     C5.3 Farming and plantations

Introduction

In this section, the history of the areas included in the National Trust property and changes in land-use are described. The present management of the Fen for nature conservation is not covered here, but is the subject of Part A of the Management Plan.
The descriptions below draw heavily on the work of Rowell (1983), whose thesis "History and Management of Wicken Fen" is an invaluable source of information on these topics. His work is summarised in Rowell & Harvey, (1988). As a result of Rowell's work, we now have a reasonably well-documented history for the Fen back to about 1600. This includes the drainage of the surrounding lands and the extent to which this affected the Fen, and also the history of land-use and resource use in the Fen and its surroundings. Adventurers' Fen is equally well-documented. This long history adds greatly to the value of the Fen as a nature reserve.
